Friday Movie: Goldfish Memory

By Mister Curie

As I noted in my post titled "Bisexuality", from Wikipedia:
Sexual attraction, behavior and identity may be incongruent. For example, sexual attraction and/or behavior may not necessarily be consistent with identity. Some individuals may identify themselves as homosexual or bisexual without having had any sexual experience. Others have had homosexual experiences but do not consider themselves to be gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Further, sexual orientation falls along a continuum. In other words, someone does not have to be exclusively homosexual or heterosexual, but can feel varying degrees of both. Sexual orientation develops across a person's lifetime-different people realize at different points in their lives that they are heterosexual, bisexual or homosexual.
Some of the comments have discussed this sexual fluidity and the inherent inadequacies of labels. Madam Curie and I recently watched a hilarious romantic comedy, available for instant viewing on Netflix, that seemed to be a great example of sexual fluidity. The movie is titled, "Goldfish Memory." The movie follows several individuals through multiple, intersecting homosexual and heterosexual relationships, with all the hilarity that such intersections can bring. I also appreciated that the homosexuality presented did not fit the American gay counter-culture stereotypes and essentially all the relationships were treated with respect, while still allowing for comedy. Five stars, two thumbs up, and highly recommended.

Anyone else out there seen this? What did you think?

  3. Thanks for the review. My credit card's going to be paid off in a couple of weeks, so I think the time has come to invest in Netflix.

I've been compiling a list of 'gay' movies to see and it's about to hit triple digits.

  4. Mr. C has decided to add a "Gay and Lesbian Movie of the Week" post every Friday to the blog. We have Netflix, so that is where we watch them all. If anyone has any suggestions for movies they would like featured, let us know!

  7. AJ, its all good, I figured you deleted your comment on purpose.

I appreciate the of lesbian films, since there are so few good ones out there. Luckily (despite the fact that the 'dangly bits,' as EV has coined them, make me want to vomit), I actually really, really enjoy gay romance films as well. Not sure why. From previous comments on this blog, it would appear that I am not alone in that sentiment as a lesbian/bisexual woman.

  8. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We'll definitely put them on our viewing lists. We do the cheapest Netflix plan (1 DVD at a time), but all the plans have unlimited instant viewing, and there is a surprisingly large number of gay and lesbian movies available.

  12. Okay, so I watched this last night. I thought it was very well done. And you didn't tell me they were Irish! Not quite a British accent but I tink us be okay

  13. @BB - Is the Irish accent a good or a bad thing? I didn't actually notice the accent too much, and usually I really dislike accents (particularly British).

  14. Oh yes, British is good. I love the British accent. Just look at today's delight!
Irish is close but not quite so I enjoyed it very much

  15. I actually have a distaste for the British accent, probably due to a bad missionary companion experience, but I'm glad it added to the movie experience for you. Perhaps I didn't notice it much because it was Irish and different enough from British that it didn't put me off. Plus I interact with several Irish people at work, so that may have made me not notice it much either.

  16. Really, Mr. C? You didn't notice the Irish?

Dang, I thought that only added to the awesomeness of the movie. I really like me some Erin brogue.
